Standing For Those Who Need Your Help

But when Reuben heard of their scheme, he came to Joseph’s rescue. “Let’s not kill him,” he said. “Why should we shed any blood? Let’s just throw him into this empty cistern here in the wilderness. Then he’ll die without our laying a hand on him.” Reuben was secretly planning to rescue Joseph and return him to his father. - Genesis 37:21-22

I'm reminded today that life is going to present us with moments where we need to stand up for the people we love, lead, and serve. Times where doing the right thing may not be popular and may even cause us pain, but we still need to do it because of what Christ has done for us.

We do it because we know that we have an advocate who stands up for us when we are accused, tempted, and persecuted. This is a part of our calling as disciples of Christ.

While Reuben's example is not perfect the way Christ's is we can learn from it and probably relate to it more because of its imperfection.

We can see someone who was jealous of his brother Joseph, someone who wanted revenge, but was not willing to go so far as to kill or force his brother into the slave trade.

He stood up for Joseph, knowing full well that if his brothers discovered his plans they would probably kill him. Reuben stood up for someone that needed help and in doing so became a key player in God's perfect will for Joseph's life.

I think this was a key learning for me today: realizing that when I do stand up for someone I am influencing their life and participating in God's purposes. We know that God calls us to this type of leadership both at home, at work, and in our community. We are to seek justice, help the oppressed, and take care of the needs of those that are less fortunate.

Standing for those who need our help unites my spirit with the God's Spirit and maturity occurs, fellowship deepens, and God is pleased.

LORD, give me the courage of Reuben. Help me to stand for those that need help. Holy Spirit, convict me and help me to discern your prompting in these critical moments - give me the words to say when I need stand up for someone. Jesus, thank you for your perfect example. Change my heart to be more like yours, open my eyes to see the opportunities to help others, and give me the strength to endure the cost of doing what is right. Amen.

  • Is there someone you love, lead, or serve that needs someone to stand by them and help them right now?
  • When has someone stood by you and helped you?
  • Are creating a culture at home and work that empowers people to stand up for what is right?

Make it a great day!
