Longing For Community
For now we see only a reflection as in a mirror; then we shall see face to face. Now I know in part; then I shall know fully, even as I am fully known. - 1 Corinthians 13:12
What a wonderful reminder of the hope we have in a future with God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. There will be a time when we fully understand what it means to be in perfect fellowship and community. A time when we reach spiritual maturity and know our Creator completely. A time when we experience the perfect community of the Trinity in all its love.
I'm reminded today that this perfect loving fellowship is the longing of my heart. A longing to fully know God, to understand His ways, to feel the completeness of his love, to see his righteousness rule everywhere. This is the longing of my spirit, my soul, and mind. And, I need to protect that longing while I wait in this world of reflections.
I need to protect this longing from the temptations of this world. The temptations that tell me to fulfill my longing through lust, drinking, drugs, pride, money, and power. The temptation to stop having hope and be filled with doubt. The temptation to say, "that day will never come, its simply a dream".
Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. - 1 John 3:2 NIV
I'm realizing more and more this protection cannot come solely from within, but that it must come from community in the here and now. It must come from living life together with other followers of Christ. We must come together more frequently - turn off the television - cancel the sporting event - put down our smart phones and engage in authentic transparent community.
This community and fellowship with others will be difficult, awkward at times, and confusing. But if committed to, it can be beautiful and safe. A place where struggles can be shared, hearts can open, and we can begin to share our life stories and receive support and encouragement from others on this same journey.
God the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, thank you for your perfect fellowship and love. Oh how my heart longs to fully know this type of love, experience it, and be ruled by it. Give me the courage today to seek out fellowship and community with other Christ followers. Help me to flee from the temptation to be cynical, to doubt, to fill that longing with destructive behaviors. Jesus give me your heart for the lost so that I courageously share the Good News with them and invite them into a safe place to fellowship and live life in the Spirit, Amen.
Questions To Consider:
- What keeps you from experiencing authentic and transparent community with other believers?
- Are you willing to start or be apart of a small group that welcomes the Spirit of God and brings together broken people to share their struggles and blessings?
- How are you fulfilling the longing of your heart to be in communion with the Trinity?
- Is the culture you are creating at work and at home a place where people feel same, accepted, and able to be known?
Make it a great day!
