Lack of role clarity can be very demoralizing for any team. When team members do not understand their role and what is expected of them it leads to mediocre performance, frustration, and eventually burnout or worse yet, termination. I've found there are five essential questions every leader must answer for each person they lead:
- What is my role on the team?
- What is expected of me?
- How do I contribute to the overall vision of the team/organization?
- What does success look like in my role?
- What is at stake if I fail in my role?
