The LORD, Our Eternal Rock

You will keep in perfect peace all who trust in you, all whose thoughts are fixed on you! Trust in the LORD always, for the LORD God  is the eternal Rock. - Isaiah 26: 3-4

So often I find myself leaning against the wrong rock in life and leadership. Sometimes it is my accomplishments. Too frequently it is the approval of others. Daily it is my ego and pride.

If I think about where I am "fixing" my eyes, in my my head I see the image of me looking in a mirror - staring at myself - looking to myself for peace, understanding, and resolution. I find myself thinking, I need to see all the angles, I need to be perfect, I need to follow my plans - success relies on me.

This morning I am comforted as a I meditate and reflect on the this song of Judah found in the book of Isaiah. It is a song of hope - a song that points us towards our eternity with Christ. It points us towards a time when we stop leaning on the temporary "rocks" of this world and instead find peace and trust as we lean on the eternal Rock - the LORD God.

While this is a song of future hope and a description of our salvation finally realized, it does not leave us hopeless as we wait for the coming of the LORD. We can trust in the LORD today and find peace. We can fix our eyes on him, and look to him for strength and encouragement.

Solomon, the wisest man in the world, understood this, and instructed us to trust in the LORD today, right now - for us to commit our plans, and goals to Him, because when we do he will show us the right path to take. The path that keeps our eyes fixed on the Him. The path that leads to the eternal Rock.

Prayer

Father, help me to keep my eyes fixed on you - focused on your will - reading your word - and living a righteous life. Holy Spirit convict me when I lean against the temporary rocks of this world and try to find peace in things and relationships outside of you. Jesus, continue to teach me how I can be in the world, not of the world, while trusting completely in you! Amen.

Reflection

  • What are the temporary rocks in your life that you lean against hoping to find security and significance?
  • What needs to happen for you to put your complete trust and faith in the eternal Rock, the LORD God?
  • How can you introduce the eternal Rock our LORD to the people you love and serve?

Make it a great day!
